Building a brick wall on top of old stone wall in garden. Boundary wall.

Myself and my neighbour share an old stone boundary wall in our back gardens. The existing stone wall is low, only about 1 metre high. I would like to raise the total height to 2m which I understand I can build with no planning permission needed.

My question is, the old stone wall is very thick which is shared with my neighbour. I will need to flatten the top of it and then add bricks on top to reach the 2m.

Do I need consent from my neighbour? Not sure if they will agree to go as high as 2m but I want to for privacy.

Any advise appreciated.

PS: the house is over 200 years old, and the walls date to the same period as far as I know.

You can build against the boundary within limits but you can’t alter the boundary itself without the neighbour’s consent.

Ideally we should have a picture. But sounds very foolish to do what is being proposed. It also sounds like it would look horrendous. Could you instead do some planting for privacy.
