Fine Gael (let’s be honest here; it’s a government decision, but it’s FG’s baby) plan to go thro’ with the VAT reduction for the hospitality industry - an industry which in large part pays at or near the minimum wage.

It will cost €600m+, not reduce the cost of anything for the consumer, & line the pockets of giants such as McDonalds.

Huge mistake that will come back to haunt them when people realise its cost effect on more targeted budget giveaways. I’m surprised the Shinners haven’t been more analytical in their response to this.

I hear mutterings about the vat reduction will cost 600+million and to raise the standard rate tax from 44.000 to 46.000 would cost 505 million,
Kind of the way FF if they were in opposition would act not attack any supporters they have in Hospitality industry and at the same time court the support of people who think the are over taxed on Income tax,
The poster above is correct FF keeping Quite,
At this stage SF are FF in opposition, without Jim,

Classic Irish fudge. Except for a smallish FG cohort, there are few votes in this VAT reduction.

And they won’t recoup a cent in extra tax from the sector as a result of it because nothing is being passed onto the customer, nor (most likely) the staff. It will be pocketed by the owners.

FG have created a mess and they should be hung out for doing so.

Both FG and FF are still trying to hold on to the old Traditional vote the still see there role as first looking after the better off lobby groups and older supporters, if they did not look after the above groups first FG and FF party support system would collapse in no time,

Between now and budget day FG and FF better off lobby groups and older supporters Will come up against new groups using data to try and get a bigger slice of the goodies on budget day,
FF are trying to stay Quite on the Vat Issue because SF are trying to eat into FF old Support Base , SF will Hold FF and FG feet to the fire on the vat issue on Budget Day when all is as clear as mud and FF and FG have no way back,
If FG and FF are foolish enough to waste 600 million on vat for a few supporters it means they have 600 million less to spend on raising the income tax standard rate for almost everyone else,

What are we discussing last year's budget or is the thread title a typo and should it read "Budget 2026"?

The shinners no pun intended will keep there powder dry until Budget day,Budget 2026

Unless of course they decide to issue their alternative budget in advance - in the hopes that someone is listening!

Oh look! here it is: https://sinnfein.ie/budget2026/ It's called "Ending the Rip-off: A Sinn Féin budget to support workers and families" and contains more blather and promises than you'd get from a tipsy Santa Claus in a crowded Shopping Mall in Letterkenny on Christmas Eve!

Pearse and Mary Lou must have stayed up very late into the night composing it.

On the bright side, it tells us what Pearse is likely to say in his response to the budget on Tuesday, so I can turn my radio off as soon as he stands up to deliver his sermon!

I accuse the government of lying on its reasoning behind this VAT reduction and my post is deleted; is that correct?

Or, it is a fear of our "North Korean libel law" as my libel lawyer friend puts it?

So much for free speech.

Wouldn't a well-respected economist like you be better advised simply to set out your opinions and the underlying rationale, without the need to accuse anyone of telling lies?

You see, that way we'd be far more likely to take you seriously, as your libel lawyer pal could probably confirm.
