Brown bin - maggots

"We don't have a brown bin but the parents do and they use the bio-degradable plastic bags, especially in warm weather."

Beware. It's compostable bags which should be used as opposed to bio-degrabale ones. Dublin City Council recently sent out notification to this effect and that bins containing any bags other than compostable ones would not be collected.

And just to add to this, the compostable bags composte rather quickly. I put all greeneries out in the garden for composting but I have lots of left over cat-food (got very spoilt gourmet cats!) and due to the hot weather now also have problems with flies. These compostable bags are very thin and degrade really fast and no problems for flies to get into. Now the brown bin is also under attack by slugs, they seem to be drawn to it in huge numbers - do they eat maggots? At least there is only one small bag of food in there, so the problem is self-limiting....
