we know of a Philipino who is willing to come to Ireland to work for us as a carer for our elderly parents but we have no idea how we go about getting her a visa or if we can do this. Where do we start?

I'd suggest taking a look on http://www.entemp.ie/ As far as I'm aware though it could be difficult as it could be necessary to demonstrate that there isn't an EU citizen available to do the job; I'm open to correction on that.

Ring the Philippine consul; he lives in Castleknock (I think). His number will be in the phone book. He should be able to advise you. I do know that you will not get a visa if you put “domestic” anywhere in the description.

Yes you must source candiates within the EEA area first. This requirement is waived for scarce grades and spouses of Work Permit Holders.

Just stick an ad on the FAS website for the required period and say that none of the applicants were suitable.

Thanks Purple I didn't know it was that simple. I have to deal with the Work Permit Section of DETE but it is always for the scarce grades or spouses.

It's that simple to get past the EEA rule but getting a permit is another story.

Do you really need to get someone to travel for this? I'd have thought that there are plenty of people locally who would be interested in similar positions?

Are you comfortable with all the stuff that goes with becoming an employer, e.g. paye/prsi, house insurance, safety statement etc etc.

You don't have a hope, I looked into all of this when I was trying to employ a lovely lady who was already living in this country as a home help and after weeks I just gave up. Only people from EU states are allowed in now so don't waste your time.

And yes spoke to that guy as well but didn't find him very helpful, just went round in circles
