Anatomy of a scam: six men and an attempted insurance fraud

Peter Murtagh has a great page long article on this in today's Irish Times.

In short, 6 guys hailed a taxi.
The taxi was rear ended and the offending car fled the scene.
The taxi driver picked up some of the debris from the offending car.
Next day the taxi driver found the car and photographed it.
The 6 guys claimed damages although there was very little damage done to the car.
The insurance company scam team investigated.
The guys were exposed in the Circuit Court yesterday.

Well worth a read.

Fair play to an honest and observant taxi driver. Some sort of punishment should have been melted out to that gang though. It's nice to see them getting caught out however, there are probable loads getting away with this sort of fraud year in year out.

There was a similar case in Cork last year where at least 1 man was jailed and another 15-20 fined and/or got suspended sentence for carrying out frauds like this. I wonder if prosecutions will also be considered on this occasion. Good to see a clamp down on it
