Boycott of holiday home owners needed - says County Council manager

Great idea; Dublin people can't afford to buy in Dublin because of all the country folk moving there and pricing them out of the market. Lets have a "Culchie Tax" and use it to subsidise Dublin born people
i will finish the sentence for you,
Dublin born Spongers,:)
Every other county call people who say things similar to what you Quoted above as Spongers no matter what county they come from, But you call them Dublin born poor things who have/want to become state dependent, :)

How about increasing the derisory stamp duty rate from the present 1% to 2, 3 4 and 5, signalled in advance over the next 4 years.
You could put a higher rate on 2nd homes.
Of course no politician would have the guts to touch the 1st part without being able to blame someone else ( TROIKA, Banks etc would do)
It would be far better if it was a recurring tax rather than a transaction tax.

Most people with holiday homes or indeed 2nd homes have bought them with money hard and honestly earned. Suddenly, they are undeserving scapegoats for underperforming politicians, other part-time whingers and full-time begrudgers.
Again with the hard earned money nonsense.
Most people with lots of money have it due to property price inflation and the value of their pension increasing due to stock market rises.
In the group of people I know in their 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's none of them have earned most of their wealth.
I include myself in that. If it wasn't for the bailout after the 2008 crash and all the money that pumped into stock markets and housing I'd be more than a million Euro worse off.

So people who are priced out of the market are spongers?

We are taking so much tax we don't know what to do with it all,
I agree we should have a wide tax base,
we are all sponging off FDI taxes,
In my view we should reduce tax on earned income and increase tax on unearned wealth.

Earned Income was always over taxed
I don't want this to go political but every party bought into over taxing PAYE income,

LPT is of course far too low and should also be increased.
However increasing stamp duty is unlikely to have the same backlash.
VAT on a new house can be equivalent to a lifetimes LPT, but rarely seems to bother the general public.

how does anyone become a local?
Meath county council require demonstration of family ties to the region in support of planning applications for one-off housing.

That wouldn’t wash in Dublin.

People born in Dublin would naturally like to be able to buy in the county but that’s becoming increasingly unrealistic. However, they shouldn’t be discriminated against in seeking to buy in all other counties.

Dublin is open to everyone, regardless of county of birth. All other counties should be equally open.

I agree. That's why, as @Salvadore points out, it is unjust that some people get to build in certain areas and others don't
This was brought to help stop one off housing in other words to stop ribbon Development it is not restricted to another county,
in other words people living a few miles from a proposed site would not get planning, in most cases unless you could prove connection to the land or a local business where the site was situated/located, even after building you could not sell for a good few years,

As far as i am concerned and I know several friends of mine who got turned down for planning who only lived a short distance from the proposed site the correct decision was made, there is major Issues with Ground water from septic tanks not to mention cost of providing services,
This forced the proper development of housing estates and helped provide housing to people from Dublin and people from all over Ireland in a planned way,
