Blown turbo on BMW 330d

The turbo has blown on my 2004 330d. It is the 204bhp model. The mechanic was trying to get it reconditioned. When he gave the part number to a specialist, he was told that it is a turbo for a 220bhp engine. I wasn't aware that the car may have been modified. This turbo is more expensive than the 204bhp model and parts are hard to get. My question is could I get a 204bhp turbo, and if necessary remap the engine back to 204bhp?

I cant imagine there is a different turbo in it.
I would guess that the turbo fitted to your car is the same that is in the E60 530d with 220bhp and as your E46 is the last run out of that car then BMW just used the newer turbo and adjusted the mapping to suit.

I dont think you will need a remap etc
Have you checked your part numbers on http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.dohttp://www.realoem.com

Thanks for that.
I did some investigating today and I think the confusion is that the turbo is quoted in the garret spec as being for a 2006 e46. This must refer to the coupe which is probably around 220bhp. It doesn't explain if I can use a 204bhp turbo instead.

The coupe uses the same engine. The difference is that the E46 coupe was still been produced and sold while the newer 30d engine was in the E60 and E90.
