Only €10 each way Dublin to all major cities with online fare, seats booked with names shown overhead, new trains, warm, sockets etc etc.

This is only on weekends, and you have to purchase at least 4 days before hand as Irish Rail, post you a hard copy of the ticket. You can not go online & purchase it for a trip on Saturday coming. When I have used this offer, I have had to ring the office to book, as the service was down.

Have no car at the moment, so seeing all public transport at its worst - dont get me started on Bus Eireann:mad:

Eh, not so. I do this regularly enough, and they email you a booking reference no. instantly. You just show the email at the ticket office and they print out the ticket there and then. The low fares aren't available on every train, but with a bit of flexibility you can usually get them on at least one leg of the journey. The same applies to what I've seen of the advance-booking discount fares on French, German, Swiss rail.

God, never thought I'd have a good word to say about "CIE"...!

I usually only book the day before (always weekdays), you get internet printout (which I gather may work on its own), but otherwise all you have to do is swipe the green ticket collection unit and it automatically prints out your tickets. No need for offices open, no queuing before people asking questions or taking ages over a ticket machine. You can choose your seats so if travelling with someone you know ye can sit together.

I swear, they make steam come out of my ears. This morning, about to get on train when inspector man hands me the new timetable for the year. I get on and proceed to look at it and by studying it I realise that my return length of travel has increased by 20 minutes. There are many things that really vex me about this, a) we are going into the year 2010 and the trains are getting slower b) they are putting extra time on trains so they can lie through their ar*es and say, our trains are 99.8% on time, give up to 10minutes, only in Ireland is 10 minutes late on time and c) my fair has gone up €300 a year. d) I just bloody committed to another year of using the tax saver, knowing I have to put up with their sh*t. dI can't go on, I think I may punch this screen
One more rant, my husband and I have to go drive down to kerry tonight for a friends wedding tomorrow, because it is bloody on at 12pm, how bloody inconsiderate, because frickin Ryanir are charging us, now get this, €660 euro for return flights for the two of us. Give up!

if you compare irish fares to UK fares we pay very little, the taxsaver scheme is superb and saves even more. how much are you paying a year?

Last time I took the Cork Dublin train I had a lovely time.

On the way up I read in the paper that I would need a boarding card because of a GAA match. No one in Cork or on the train mentioned this. Why do the GAA have preference over normal travelers anyhow?
The ticket station in Heuston was closed so no boarding pass for me.
Had to leave Dublin on the 12pm train to be sure of transport.
I arrived at 10.30 and had to stand in between carriages beside the toilet with another 20 people. I'm sure this is not safe transport.
DH rescued me in Mallow and I have never set foot on an Irish train since.

Why would you compare Irish fares to UK fares?

Look at the length of rail track in the UK compared with that which Irish Rail has. Irish Rail has diesel locomotives for long distance trains, UK is electric.

The two just can't be compared.
