Bike carrier for car

Hi, my mum is buying a bike carrier for my bro for xmas, there appear to be two types she could get, ones that mount on the towbar or ones that mount on the boot, does anyone have any idea which would be the better choice? They only really need it for one bike most of the time.

Don't know about the tow bar mounted one, but I have a boot mounted one and find it excellent. I have often had 3 mountain bikes on it and they never budge. It's always better to buy one that can take 2 or 3 bikes as invariably you will end up transporting one or two filthy dirty biking friends as well. Just be aware when you are buying it that the model will vary depending on whether its a saloon or hatchback car.

I saw the boot mounted ones in Halfords, are they ok? They look a bit unstable, but maybe they work ok. Do you have to drive slowly with them or what's the story?
