best way to ask for and get a raise?!

I am doing salary review with my manager over the coming days and have just had very positive appraisal with same manager.
I am pretty sure that I am underpaid for my role and will be looking to go from 35k to 42k (bit more than the usual 5 or 6% that we get).
Its not just a matter of simply wanting more money but being properly paid for the work that I do!

I get on well with my manager so wondering if anyone can help me with putting a good case to her. I have a good case for it and plenty of back up to help my cause, but would like advice on how to sell it to her to give me best chance of actually getting the raise (we're in the sales business so will need to do a good sell on her!)

Also wondering if I should ask for more than 42k with the expectation that they'll offer less??

Grateful for any advice

Hi Noclue, I managed to secure a raise similar to what you are looking for at my last pay review. I had spoken to my manager telling him that I felt my salary did not reflect the role i was doing and the experience I had.
I researched the current market value of my role. Using salary surveys and what other companies were offering for roles similar to mine.
It was agreed that my salary was below the market rate and was adjusted accordingly.
Of course a good review was vital, and demonstrating that I had taken on new tasks and often exceeded expectations when it came to my day to day job.

I am in IT though, but I am sure the principal is the same!

Every company is different of course but to explain how it works where I work (as a manager) I discuss salary increases for my whole team with the managing director who sets the budget and based on my feedback and input we agree salary increases together for everyone on the team (all mgrs do this with him in private). The budget for the coming year is then signed off by the steering committee and you cant change it.

This is done weeks before the actual salary reviews take place with the employees. So basically its a done deal by the time the review takes place, you are told what you are getting and there is no oppertunity for you to suggest anything.

If someone doesnt agree with their salary increase then they can raise it with their manager and it may or may not be addressed the following year depending on the person but there is no going back changing the budget for 1 person after its been signed off.

I hope that helps, it wont necessarily work that way for you but I do advise speaking up if you are not happy with it, not to threaten to leave but to say you think you are not valued etc..... managers do listen and work hard to keep good people.
