Best return for large lump sum-no risk

I have a lump sum of 120k that I want to put on deposit, plus regularly save into. I want to be able to access it in case of emergeny ie loss of job.
I guess I should spread it between institutions, so that it has a better guarantee.
I just don't understand AER etc. I'd love if all the sites had a "if you put in x amount for 12 months etc" then this is what you end up with. Rabo seems to be the only one who does this.
What about saving bonds/certificates?
I'm hoping you good folks can help.

Thanks Chris. I saw that, but am a bit thick and don't get the AERs. Think the saving bonds look good particularly as they are not subject to dirt.
