Best doors for sound reduction.

Want to change my kitchen door as sound travels from there to other rooms. The door at present is just a flush hollow door. What is the best type of door to put here to reduce noise levels? Walls in house are plaster board so noise would be an issue anyway.

Try a half hour fire door. A flush door for painting should only be around €40/€50. Fairly widely available too. If you really wanted to be thorough you could fit brush fire strip around it too.

Thanks for that. I actually rang a joinery this evening and the guy was mentioning about that type of door. What really surprised me was the fact it was so cheap as a couple of other places I rang mentioned using solid oak or other which were much dearer. What material is in this door that makes it good with sound do you have any idea?

Fire doors will do the job but they may not be as attractive.

We have some solid cherry wood interior door which do the job quite nicely (when closed!). Would cost over €100 a pop though.

I'm going to change all the doors but the one I'm most interested in at the minute is the kitchen one so I'm glad to know the fire door will work. I'm not too worried about how it looks once it works. Staples do you think the fire door would be actually better than the solid wood or is their a great amount of difference?

Are you sticking with flush doors? If so and you want to paint it, get the cheap flush fire door (there are also 4 and 6 panel ones that would be around the €80 - €100 that are designed to be painted)

If you want a timber finish the cost will depend entirely on the timber type and door design and could be anywhere between €80 - €600 +

If you are looking for Oak in particular I would go for an engineered Oak core with Oak veneered surface. Don't worry about getting half hour rated if you go for this type of thing as the door will be solid anyway.

As mentioned in the other current thread on here about internal doors, Deanta and Doras would be a good starting point.

I read somewhere with the fire door that when it closes it is noisy I wonder do you know if thats correct. Thanks PetrolHead for all the info.

That may be referring to the self closing spring making them bang. If you forget and leave it go it swings shut with a wallop. You only need these when the door is actually acting as a fire door though so you wouldn't fit them for your app.
