Banks eliminating free checking

It's all over CNN today that many banks will be elinating free checking. Why? Because of the new laws going into affect regarding credit card fees, overdraft fees, etc. which were created to prevent banks from "raping" consumers with fees. It seems that the government plugs one hole, the the banks find a way to create another.

I really don't know who is worse for nickel and diming you to death with fees... banks or the airlines.

Sorry, right sentiment, wrong country. :) This is an Irish site and Mick O'Leary may be watching ....
 
I'm wondering how long free banking will last here though.
Probably afraid that the first to break ranks will lose valuable accounts & deposits?
