Went to local Ulster Bank today to transfer a small payment, under €50 to an account in Italy. I had all destination numbers IBAN etc. Was asked for photographic ID that the payment could be made, as it was 'an international payment'

Is theis the rule, or was teller just being awkward?

Made a payment to a Polish a/c recently from my bank a/c. Was no issue and no id requested.

They have to sign and attach a copy of your id with any payment. They weren't being awkward - dosn't matter if its €5 or €50,000 that is their procedures.

even if you have an account with them and sending money from your account?

AIB have a great online international transfer and they don't even charge you for using it.

I'm not sure if it is the rule/law but it is good practice. I have been asked for ID in UlsterBank nearly everytime I have requested a Bank Draft. I don't think the amount has anything to do with it.

transferred money for rent of apt in canaries recently through ulster bank. 51c charge. next day got a phone call from bank asking me to confirm that it was me who was in the previous day as the bank official forgot to get identity. just confirmed it was me and the payment went through no problem.

I have used the new(ish) Bank of Ireland online transfer facility, and am pretty happy with it. Transfers are free (at least within Euro zone).
