im going to thailand for a couple of months, my first trip is bangkok to lao can anybody tell me if the bus journey is at all comfy?? or is it just better to fly, i want to see some of the country so i am on two minds wether to fly or not... but i heard that the bus journey is terrible....

Hi, you didn't say where in Lao you were getting the bus to, but I took the bus from Luang Prabang to Vientiane which was tough, very mountainous. Flights were reasonably cheap.

BKK to the Lao border will be an easy comfortable bus ride , inside Lao is not as comfortable but more "interesting".

Bus journey is terrible. Really. Second time I did it (Visa run IIRC) 6 of us rented out a minivan with lots of space and a driver. Worked out pretty cheap and well worth it.

Flying is better though, especially to Cambodia.

I'm so jealous. Would love to be going back.

You can get a train from Bangkok to Nong Khai, which is across the river from Viantiane. The train is handy as it runs overnight so you don't really lose any time.
