We have had a smell of kerosene/oil/firelighters in our house for the past 2 days and the smell appears to move around the house, starting in the kitchen and then moving upstairs into the bedrooms. Our neighbour also has issues with the smell although it appears to be worse in their house. We have had the boilers checked and there is no issue there. We haven’t lit the fire in the last 4 days either.

Our house is a year and a half old and the builders don’t know what’s going on. I see a post on here that had the same issue: https://www.askaboutmoney.com/threa...stairs-of-property-unable-to-identify.175143/

But there was no update as to if that was resolved.

We had the smallest of oil leaks at our oil burner/boiler which is about 3 metres from the back door outside.
There was a very small leak in a small pipe but the smell came into the house.
Even on a rainy day the smell came in. When you saw the size of the tiny leak of oil you wouldn't have believed it could have stunk the house out like it did.
Don't expect to see a massive puddle of oil anywhere - look for small oily looking stains. Dab stains with kitchen paper and sniff, you will know by the smell straightaway if it's fresh oil there.

Its a major issue if it is leaking into the soil so needs to be found and addressed quickly.

You need to check your insurance policy as well especially if you are looking at a big clean up cost.
