The OP should have a quiet word with this person's father. That will quickly bring the deadbeat son to order, and teach him a much-needed lesson.

The “client” is a friend of my friend’s son so I don’t know his father.

My friend is aware of the situation and feels suitably bad.

We refer people because we trust them. That works both ways. Your friend thinks highly of you, hence the referral. He also trusted Johnny to pay his bills. Has your friend asked his son why Johnny has decided not to pay his debt and make him look bad?

I don’t know. I thought about asking him but ultimately that’s his business.
