Avoiding Stamp Duty

Hi,

currently looking at a house that has yet to be registered in the owners name (as it is a newly built house). He wants to sell it and I would like to buy it before it is registered in his name (to avoid stamp duty). What benefits would there be for him if I was to do this or is it better for him to register it in his name and then sell it?

Developers do this all the time (and save themselves a fortune in the process).
