Autostart......

Simple question I'm sure but I can't seem to figure it out.

Every time I switch on my PC, windows media player opens up automatically. I don't want it to. Am running XP.

Cheers Clubman,
Don't think this is the problem. I think I'm virus free. I use norton (up to date) ,adaware and also have XP SP2. Think I'm clean. Media Player doesn't even try to get online when opening.

Older versions of windows (as far as I remember) had a function whereby you could list all the programs you wanted to start automatically. XP doesn't seem to have this function. I just want to switch same off.

There is a new version of wmp which I haven't downloaded yet ( waiting for BB which I should have ordered ). Maybe this will solve.

Windows XP has that as well. In the Startup folder.
Either in
Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup or
Documents and Settings\[Your name]\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Excellent, I suspect that may be it. Will try at home later on.
Thanks

Actually that seems very unlikely to be the cause going by this lot and a few other places I was looking at...
www.daniweb.com/techtalkf...2841.html.

I found a solution. Download CWShredder and run it and it will remove whatever is hijacking your machine.
Norton and Adware don't work but this does.

Excellent Joe.

You could be right. We'll give that a blast.
It's funny I have noticed a slowdown in my home pc since I downloaded Norton of all things.

No joy with either solution unfortunately. Even replaced WMP9 with WMP10. Still opens up every time I start windows up.

startup

ahh nortons. the tortoises friend.

does anyone use nortons and NOT have performance problems?

On the startup problem.... (try last entry first)
Try
a) Go to your Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. In the list on the left side, find the name of the service you want to change (Windows Media Player); go over to the Startup Type column and change it from automatic to manual.

b)
have you seen the registry app in the clean pc post? It lets you see whats running on startup. Maybe able to do something with it there.

c)
Also search the registry for media player, there might be a flag set there that you can change.

d) you may have a virus(worm). this may actually be likely as the symptoms are right..
See [broken link removed] for description and removal instructions

Also, I didnt know [broken link removed] had spyware.

Re: startup

Cheers Car. Will give that a bash over the weekend or when I fall in the door later on.

Re: startup

You could also try this:

the link is to the d/l page.

HijackThis is a tool, that lists all installed browser add-on, buttons, startup items and allows you to inspect, and optionally remove selected items. The program can create a backup of your original settings and also ignore selected items. Additional features include a simple list of all startup items, default start page, online updates and more. Intended for advanced users.

it is very good, and you can post logs for analysis to several sites which specialise in spy-ware, browser hijacking, etc,

Done....

The last suggestion seems to have worked Car. Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Though my machine seems to be a little slow at start up. There is a noticable delay on graphics popping up on the shortcuts. Maybe it's Norton doing its work. Maybe its something more sinister?

Re: Done....

In case it's of any use [broken link removed] is free for personal use and doesn't hog system resources in my experience.

Re: Done....

Hi ClubMan,

Does avg catch these browser hijackers?

ajapale

Re: Done....

No. It's a virus checker. You still need to catch browser parasites and the like. I just meant that if Norton is hogging your PC then you might want to try something else less resource intensive.
