My mother has an audio cassette recording of her late mother and uncle chatting. Unfortunately, the tape has snapped and is starting to come out of the cassette. Is there any way we can recover what is on the tape?

You can get tape splicing kits, or at least you used to be able to, that are pretty simple to use and will allow you to join the split ends so it can be played again. Transfer the contents immediately though.

It's quite easy to put the ends of the tape back together with a bit of sellotape. Open up the cassette (sometimes there are little screws but it should just pull apart), use a pen to roll the loose tape onto the spool, cut a small piece of sellotape and put it on the table sticky side up. Then carefully place the 2 broken parts of the tape on it and fold the sellotape around.

I used to do it with tapes that had gotten tangled. But copy it on to a new tape then.

Been there done that, but never had to physically open a tape. A little bit of cellotape should work.

Use a very very think bit of sellotape and when its repaired rewind and fast forward it a few times before playing to 'bed' the repair down.

I've often done this, although I would recommend using "Scotch Magic Tape" by 3M for making the repair as it does deteriorate with age.

Thanks folks for those suggestions. All I want is to get the audio off and onto MP3. Like all these things, I should have done it before now, but you know how it is...

I've used cellotape in the past. You'll have a small gap thats about it. Then record the tape on to something esle.
