Hello
Im looking for hints & tips on insulating the attic...The house was built 7 yrs ago, & I think the insulation that was used was that thin foil stuff on the roof.I dont think its doing a good job as the house is so cold even with the rads on.
Im thinking of doing it myself & would appreciate any help & tips. Is is a big Job.... how much insulating would I need for a 4bed house. & is the fibreglass the right one to us..is there a cheper alternative..& Could a Blonde do it hahaha...only kidding ..Im blonde alright & a woman But Im handy enough at DIY... really I am!

What type of house do you have.If you are insulating a standard attic you have a number of options.You can roll out 2 layers of 200mm thick fibreglass (v. easy but a bit itchy).You can also fit rigid insulation between the joists (Kingspan & Xtratherm have options for different thicknesses).

If you are doing a dormer roof you need to consider leaving airflow for your roof trusses.
 
What are the pros and cons of fibreglass vs rigid insulation. Is there a significant cost difference? I have a house with fibreglass and I never really liked it, and I think it could do with being beefed up. I'd love to get rid of the fibreglass.
 
its a 4bed dormer....Eh..whats Roof Trusses? is that the A shape? Also the measurements are 50ft x 35...hope this helps!
 
Can you explain more about letting airflow, dh hoping to convert attic himself, timber trusses there already. What kind of nsulation is best, s it expensive..Saw this a few years ago, someone converted attic and instead of plastering wall and ceiling, they put up timber panelling instead. Would this be easy to do?
 
the standard of insulation you should have in your attic floor is 10inc thick, it is an easy enough job roll out the rolls between the timber from one side to the other,
