As a landlord, our elec was cut off because we did not re-regis

Hi, as a landlord, our elec was cut off after 10 working days because we did not re-register our name as account holder after tenant moved out. tenant was expecting bill( which was fully paid up due to the fact that a 200 euro deposit is paid at the outset)to be sent to her home address and so because of a misunderstanding we were cut off. I contacted ESB re reconnection fee and was quoted 98 Euro. I then contacted Bord Gais who quoted 199 Euro. I explained to the company that I might as well revert back to ESB( tenant had switched to Bord Gais) as their recconnection fee was 98 euro. Bord Gais said ' oh hang on a minute until I double check ................... Actually its 90 Euro plus vat' A genuine error or something else?? This is my first experiece with this company and after dealing with ESB for 20 years I have never been cut off for any reason.

It doesnt matter who supplies your Electricity. If a tenant moves out and they do not sign the LLord back up to the account, it goes through a de-registration process.

A letter is sent to the property as 'The Occupier' to prompt the new person to sign up.

Its a case of making sure your account is re-opened if the premise is vacant (another Llord responsibility).

I reckon the person you were talking to genuinely got mixed up, you are getting through to a call centre and we all know what happens there - training issues, new agents on the phone etc.

For future reference, you can set up a Landlord Agreement with the utility companies, so that the account automatically defaults to your name and address when a tenant closes their account. This removes the risk of being cut-off because of someone's mistake.

Also, I learned years ago to always contact the utility companies myself when tenants are either moving in or moving out.
