we are looking to buy a new sofa we want a corner group. we have been to numerous shops but the nicest one we have seen is on the current argos catalogue looking for advise from anybody who has bought furniture at argos before, quality? good or bad buy?

I bought a futon sofabed from them some years ago and it was fine. Not the most comfortable thing to sit on, but then futons are better to sleep on than to sit on! But for the money I paid it was good value.

If you're anywhere near a branch of Homebase go and take a look at their sofas - they sell the same range as Argos, you can look at both websites and you will see many of the same sofas.

I've recently replaced my Argos futon sofabed with a pull-out leather sofabed from Land of Leather. It's not quite as comfortable to sleep on but is much nicer to sit on and was €999 before delivery.

Hi Kieran,

We had a similar situation a few years ago, Mrs d2 looked everywhere for a specific type of couch and kept referring everything to one that was very close to what she wanted in Argos....We ended up buying the one in Argos, I hated it because it was uncomfortable to sit on but in fairness, although it feels lightweight (especially when you are taking off covers etc. to wash them) it's still going strong...

Bought a sofa from Argos a few years back, sent it back immediately as it was very poor quality, worst I've ever sat on in fact. Even the posters above say what they bought was uncomfortable.

They'll take it back if you don't like it but why go through all the hassle, buy one elsewhere, really!

I've bought furniture (table and chairs) from Argos before and honestly wouldn't recommend it. I'm struggling to describe the problem without using the cliche 'you get what you pay for'. I disliked it from the day it arrived. The quality is very poor e.g a plant pot on the table shakes it. The chairs are uncomfortable and unstable and (in my opinion) the furniture looked better in the catalogue than it does in my home.

We purchased some furniture from Argos a few years back and had problems with it, the quality was not good started to full apart in only a few years and was never very compfy in the first place, guess thats what you get if you can not try it out before buying.
We had to replace it recently and decided best to try some where else, saw a nice range in Reids, worth looking at but actually found a set in cost plus sofas at good price.
Really suggest you look around first as you can get same valueas Argos but can be sure of what you are getting

In the last house i rented the couch was bought in Argos. Had it for about 3 years and it was absolutely fine, no problems at all.

Not necessarily true that you get what you pay for - because of tight budget got some bedroom furniture from Argos some years ago - appalling quality. Then, six years ago brought in kitchen, bed, tables and some other bits from IKEA in Amsterdam - they're still in perfect nick (and the bed is more comfortable than main bed which cost five times more!)

Problem with them for me is you can't sits on it and see if it's right for you.

Hi Kieran,

I bought two sofas about 10 years ago. Went with Argos after looking around a lot as they fit the room perfectly and they had removable / machine washable covers. They were mid price range for Argos about IR £450 at the time and are still going strong in my Nephew's home, one was a sofa bed and they use it quite regularly when his mate's are over and say its comfy. I visited a friend around the same time who had kitted the entire house with Argos stuff as they had just moved in and didn't have time to shop around, their sofa's were cheaper and seemed less well made and were less comfortable. It's hit and miss I know as you can't see and test out the range for comfort, but they will take it back withing 14 days if it really doesn't suit.

I would use Argos as a last resort. Bought a three and two seater sofa from them when I first moved into my house. They were a good price and as with everyone moving in for the first time, cash wasnt free flowing.

The first couch sunk after a few days, sent that back and the same happened the second. Its not like it was being used a lot, as the two in the house weren't even there most of the time.

The third went the same way, I persevered and got my money back eventually. The fabric was nice to look at, but nasty to the touch. You could also feel the wooden frames and the cushions sagged very quickly.

Comfort wasnt a thing either.

I agree with TreeTiger, go to Homebase and see if they if they have a display model, as they are the same company as Argos and have the same ranges (in fact this is a good tip for everything from Argos).

I have a sofa from Ikea (I seem to be Ikea woman, and if you haven't checked out their sofa range then you should) and in the showroom the sofa was incredibly comfortable, yet when I got my own one home it wasn't nearly as comfortable. However after a few months I've realised it takes a bit of time to "soften up" the sofa cushions, now it's fantastically comfortable. And I realise the reason the display model in the shop was so comfortable was that customers trying it out had softened it up, so you were effectively trying out a worn-in sofa rather than a brand new one.

Hope this makes sense! My point being that if the frame seems sturdy, don't worry unduly if your new sofa isn't completely comfortable right away, not if the one you tested out (in this case hopefully in Homebase) was comfortable. Oh, and also check out the Ikea sofas http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?query=corner+sofa
