Picked up a BT Studio 500 DECT (not GAP compliant though in case you already have DECT handsets that you want to connect!) phone and answering machine for €39.95 in Argos today which seems like a good deal in case anybody else is interested. Seems to do the basics pretty well and uses standard AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries which is handy (no more messing about with strange cordless battery formats!). It's in their sale/clearance catalogue. Their Ring and Reserve system seemed pretty good too when I used it to reserve the item.
