Are there any circumstances where AVCs can be cashed before NRA

A friend of mine has got into personal financial difficulties. He is a member of a DB pension scheme and also paying AVCs .He is wondering is there any way he can get at this AVC fund ie cash it in .To my limited knowledge I have told him no,it can only be cashed at NRAge.Am I correct in this advice.Regards
 
With the agreement of his employer and the scheme trustees, he can retire from age 50 onwards, but I suspect that's not a solution for his particular problem.

Other than that, the only way he can access the funds early is in the case of serious ill health.
