Hi

My father hasn't worked in about three years, due to health reasons. He sold his house and has been living off the proceeds since then. Now he wants to apply for Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension, his doctor has agreed that he cannot work.

He worked for over thirty years, but obviously does not have the 48 weeks PRSI paid up for last year.

Should he apply for the benefit or the pension? Will there be a problem re the PRSI?

Thanks in advance

I would advise you to call into your local CIC information Service and discuss this with them as it is a bit complicated and see if they recommend that your father should go ahead and apply or not.

If he is not eligible for Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension (due to insufficient PRSI in the relevant year) he may be eligeble for Disability Allowance
