Hi folks,
can anybody suggest any jobs that have summers or even august off?? excluding teaching/lecturing...was thinking hard about teaching but dont think i should do it just for the holidays-i bet its hard work!

Have a degree in science and willing to consider anything, even if its not great pay, as time off is more important.

Any suggestions would be welcome!

You could consider contract work, I know a guy who hasn't had a full time job ever. He did an accontancy qualification and even before he qualified he worked on contracts. He still does this and has no shortage of work. He arranges his work around his free time and often takes summers off or goes for long winter sun holidays. The downside is of course he doesn't get paid for holidays. He hasn't a family and I'm not sure if you could manage such a routine if you had (well you couldn't take months off unpaid anyway)
 
Have a kid - Your legal entitlement to parental leave gives you 14 weeks unpaid leave over the first 5 years. After 3 years, have another kid.
 
If you have children under 18 years of age, civil service may give you term time of either 8, 10 or 12 weeks unpaid leave? Brilliant for parents who have no one to mind the children over the summers months:)

The entitlement to parental leave applies to all employees, not just civil servants.

Parental leave does - term time leave doesn't. A lot of public sector companies allow some staff to work term time ie. September - June. The time off is not part of parental leave.
 
Barristers and judges get August and September off every year, although the barristers are self employed so don't earn anything during that time either.
 
Rainyday, term time and parental leave are different as others pointed out. Term term pertains to the time school going kids are off school and the civil service is one of the few places you can get it. Parental leave is totally different. In my case I'm not entitled to parental leave but I am to term time as it covers school going kids up to 18 years or children with special needs. Means you get to spend the summer with the family for 8,10 or 12 weeks yippee!!
 
Couldnt you be a secondary teacher if you've a degree? I think you've to do a Hdip beforehand but as far as i now that only takes 18 months.
Civil sevrice term time is a gift. You need to be there at least a year before applying and clsoing date is around middle of November. You can try get 8 12 or 16 weeks off afaik and you can get your salary paid over the entire 12 months. i think its about 80% of your normal pay.

I know quite a few lecturers and most of them will privately admit its an easy job for the money. Lots of time off, , even during term, and great holidays. Good consistent income too. In fact many of them are so bored with all their time off they do nixers etc.

You're right - it is hard work, but very rewarding if you give it your full commitment. Don't even think about it though if one of your main reasons for taking it up is the time off.
