friend willed some money from estate of uncle in California. Part of estate is in the form of shares which executor proposes selling and distributing proceeds.
Friend was hoping to keep her part as shares and wonders is there a way to do this without they being sold and bought back thus incurring two sets of fees.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

You say willed some money and then talk about substituting what she was left with other stuff in the estate.
What exactly does the will say? This will drive what the executor can do.

Why not take the cash and buy the shares from the executor.
Are the publicly quoted or privately held shares?

the will states his estate to divided equally between his nephews and nieces after any expences

then the executor has no issue with establishing a value which is good news.
The share register for the company may allow a simple stock transfer form to be used as long as any Govt taxes are paid such as stamp duty or equivalent are paid.
I don't believe there is any need to use a broker.

Where are they quoted?
