Another Gold Medal

We came 5th in Gold Medals as per following table:
Jamaica = 4 GM for pop of 3 = 1.33 gpm
Australia= 17/25 = .68
Netherlands = 10/17 = .59
GB = 22/66 = .33
Ireland = 2/7 = .28
Japan = 27/126 = .21
USA = 39/331 = .12
China = 38/1439 = .03
You might need to include a few smaller countries... e.g.
Bermuda have 1 gold medal and total population 64,000!

New Zealand have 7gm / 5m = 1.44
Norway have 4gm / 5.3m = 0.75
Hungary have 6gm / 10m = 0.6
Denmark have 3gm / 6m = 0.5
Latvia have 1gm / 2m = 0.5

That young woman has earned her place up there with the elite. We learned in a telly interview with a colleague that she'd been phoning patients she knew to share the best of what was happening for her with them. Over and above what her sport demands of her.

Well done Kellie, well done her family, her community and her sport.

Maybe we should stop measuring the quantities of things we bring home and try to measure the intangibles, that rare "feel good" people like Kellie spread.

It usually takes a gold medal or final for people to sit up and take notice at a wider level... the people who dealt with her day to day dont need the gold medal to appreciate what she does.

On the sporting front watching full events made me think about some of the Irish athletes who came home empty handed but nor for lack of effort.
Emily Kay got back up after a crash in one of the womens omnium cycling events to finish 13th overall later that day.
Natalya Coyle who was paired with a dodgy horse in the modern pentathlon.
Russell White who came in 48 out of 49 in the mens triathlon... I was cheering him on to that 48th place.

Well done Kellie.

No doubt she got up early in the morning to work hard.
A nurse by profession? We need people like her, serving the community. Thankfully she is to hand in the centre of the population and not having to make long arduous commutes everyday simply because her income bracket cannot afford to buy or rent privately in her own area.

Fair play to you, only you could politicise this topic. :)

No that'd be the worse thing to do for our medal hopes. Not many posh kids taking up boxing. It thrives on adversity.

Kellie is a cleaner in St Vincent's , Fairview.

Newspaper article states she was formerly working in catering in the hospital but changed to cleaning.

She's gone back to work this week, albeit part time.

She provided us with a great few fights. A lot of the Irish competitors didn't even perform to their personal best levels. Which is an indication of how difficult it is to do so. Congrats to her on her brilliant achievements.

The new job apparently provides her with greater flexibility for training times, training camps, attendance at international competitions, and maybe fewer temptations to "nibble" at stuff. It speaks volumes for her that her notion of luxury, apart from being home with her family was to relax with her feet up with a pizza and a bit of ice-cream. And not a weighing scales in sight!! I hope she enjoyed them all!

Not forgetting our silver medalists , I know it is slightly off subject but they deserve a mention, Eve Mc Crystal and Katie George Dunlevy in cycling and Nicole Turner in swimming. Well done to all three on a great achievement.
