An Post: “could not deliver” cheque

Today I received an email from my bank branch saying that An Post had given them a cheque of mine saying they could not deliver it.

I posted the cheque three weeks ago and last week I gave up on it ever arriving and made a bank transfer instead. I then cancelled the cheque.

The envelope had to have been opened by A Post to identify me and the branch.

The envelope was correctly addressed and it had my “return to sender” details on the back. It also had whatever postage the post office told me it needed. (I can’t recall.)

I’m annoyed because of the cost involved and big delay in paying the money.

But, why it couldn’t be delivered remains a mystery.

Not impressed.

I got a load of those return address labels free when I made a donation to Dog's Trust ages ago; handy little things.

it had my “return to sender” details on the back
I always do that too but seems that An Post recommend that you write it on the front in the top left corner.
4. Put a return address in the top left hand corner so undelivered mail can be sent back
But I would have thought that they'd check front and back for a return address before opening it. Maybe it depends on the individual...

Could the envolope have got caught in some sort of sorting machine and damaged, maybe the cheque was then separated from the envelope so they had no address.

I hope this isn't seen as OT, but I note this morning that appointment letters from some hospitals include a "If undelivered please return to EirCode" message printed on the envelopes by the franking machines. A great idea given the sensitivity of some of the contents of hospital correspondence, but why not all he asks, mentally composing an email to big HSE?
