An old right of way - how long before deemed closed?

We have an old right of way between our property and our neighbours. It has been closed for as long as we remember (at least 30 years and possibly 50/60 years) and completely overgrown.

There is some talk about opening it up - alot of development in the area and we really don't want this. It could pose a security problem as there are alot of messers drinking cans etc. around the place when the weather permits and opening it up would really only benefit the developer as no-one has walked it for decades.

What should we do? We don't want to draw too much attention to the fact that there is an old lane there but we also want to sort the problem.

Any advice would be appreciated.
