Apostrophe

What a load of subject changers and nitpickers you are!

Letting off steam: we can be as subversive as we like -kinda

You are absolutely correct. We do like to call a spade a spade here :)

Apostrophe

QUOTE: "There is no apostrophe after its."

I thought there might be an apostrophe, as it's a "possessive".

-"Technically, Kerry and its' Ring are in the British Isles"-

So is there no possessive apostrophe?

.

it's
always means
it is

two cats
one cat's dinner
two cats' dinners

Re: .

So is there no possessive apostrophe?

There is no apostrophe in the possessive "Its" for the same reason there is no apostrophe in "hers".

Apostrophe

Apologies that this have gone from a gardening to a punctuation thread; the joys of AAM!

"' it's always mean it is "

Yep, understood.

1) one cat's dinner
2) two cats' dinners

Understood the second one. So why is there an apostrophe before the 's', and not after? Is it not possessive also?

The second one is a plural possessive, and the first one is singular possessive.

Apostrophe

Oh right, thanks for that!

I didn't know the apostrophe was placed before the 's' with a singular possessive.

!

When I was at school, I used to the put the apostrophie directly above the s.

Re: Apostrophe

"' it's always mean it is "

er ... not quite correct.

Sometimes it means it has.

As in ... it's been such a long day!

British Isles

Getting somewhat back to the original topic I was in Manchester yesterday, in the taxi on the way to the airport the driver asked me which terminal I wanted, as I wasn't sure he asked me where I was going. When I replied Dublin he assured me it was terminal 3 I needed, I discovered afterwards that this is the terminal for domestic flights only, so it's not just Alan that thinks we're in the UK.
