Alan Shatter running as independent

I think it's a pity he was at cabinet for a mere three years of the 33 he spent in the Oireachtas, most of it as an under-utilised backbench TD.

I think the Irish system doesn't make space for TDs who are good at legislative scrutiny and committee work.

If Shatter fails at the Dáil I think he'd have a good shot at a TCD Seanad seat.
Apparently he was one of the most difficult people to work with, and that made him hard to appoint to a cabinet role.

He, along with Alan Dukes, didn't suffer fools gladly. That is a big disadvantage in politics, and when interacting with Civil Servants.

With all the boxes tallied, he is on only 4% of the votes.

I am genuinely surprised by that.

Kate O'Connell who is also ex FG is on 4% in Dublin Bay South.
