Air to heat pump experience

Hi, just looking for general feedback from people who have retrofitted an air to heat pump. Have you found it to be a good move generally? Any problems? Any feedback gratefully accepted!

I think you need to be a lot more specific to avoid getting bad feedback. Heat pumps are only one part of the whole heating setup of your home. They work very well when implemented correctly with modern well insulated A rated homes.

If your home is currently heated by oil/gas/other and you think it is cold, then a heat pump will not fix it, in fact, it would probably make it worse and cost you more in energy bills. If this is the case, you need to look at improving insulation and reducing heat loss. This will improve your comfort levels regardless of using a heat pump or not

A starting point would be:
How big is your home in sqft/sqm?
What is your current heating system?
How much energy do you consume for heating in kWh? e.g. 11,000kWh is national gas average
Do you know your BER rating?

In my opinion, heat recovery ventilation will do more for comfort and quality of life than a heat pump. Can be expensive but when done well it is surpurb.

I don't understand how ac is considered expensive but the reverse ac / the air to heat is efficient and green

Insulate first to keep heat in

sound advice from _OkGo_

An A-rated house will not require as much heat as an older lower BER rated home.

other points to note:

if your existing heating system uses radiators, they will be too small to give you the same output.

your current hot water cylinder may not be suitable.

Heat Pumps run longer at a lower output than gas/oil boilers and are usually not controlled by a timeclock.

Many thanks for all the replies ! Just for anyone who is interested, we went ahead with the Air to heat pump. The cylinder had to be replaced but went ahead with our original radiators. It is working great and the house is a much more constant comfortable heat. Delighed with the result so far. The company we dealt with were very professional. :)

You did well to get that done with no building work permitted. What else apart from the cylinder and pump did you get done? BER from what to what? Insulation, etc?

All about the amount of energy involved. AC is considered expensive just like a heat pump will be crazy expensive in a poorly insulated home.

Get the building airtight and highly insulated and AC would be cheap to run. Of course in our climate, once you do the former, you're not going to to need AC unless you are dealing with solar gain issues from a lot of south facing glass.

Would interested to see how this effects the Electric bill over a winter period.

Unless you have solar too to cover some of the day load.
