Accounting Technician

Hi, Any opinions on where would be best to study the Accounting Technician course in South Dublin. Has anyone been to Dun Laoghaire Senior College or Rathmines College - are they good??

Background is I am 30 with a 2.5 year old; currently working part-time. I have a BA in French & Spanish and worked in France for 5 years. I like the buzz of working in an office environment, am fairly numerate & computer savvy plus interested in finance/business. Would aim to go back to work full-time when son goes to primary school.

I would do the course in the mornings while my son is at playschool & work Sat & Sun. Anyone any ideas or tips?
 
SCD has quite a good reputation, a good atmosphere and generally very good lecturers. The students are typically school leavers or early twenties.
 
I did the course in Dun Laoghaire, but that was full-time straight from school.
I found it a good college but that is 16 years ago so things may have changed.
 
I rang Dun Laoghaire & IATI; so think I will go ahead and apply to do the course.

Aloysius, did many from your year go on to become Accountants? Was the course very tough or manageable? Am v. willing to put the work in & hope to gain experience temping in an accounts office during holidays etc.
 
I also did that course as a mature student but as I did it down the country the location is of no help to you, however I found the course itself very interesting and very focused. I was lucky to have wonderful and very encouraging teachers which is very important if you have been out of the study mode for a long time.

For me a vital part of the course was the revision sessions in UCD at the weekends. They seemed to bring the whole thing together and were great exam preparation

I didn't keep in touch with many from my year but I don't know of one who went on to be an accountant! I went to work in an accountants myself when I finished and did consider doing the exams but was too lazy!
I found the course pretty easy, I believe everyone in my class passed but then we were doing it full time, doing it part time might be different! The accountancy bit was very similar to Leaving Cert accountancy. I liked the taxation best, it was the most interesting and seemed the most relevant to a future job. The business law was just a matter of learning stuff off by heart.

Just read back over your origianl post. If you are 30 with a BA and any type of head for figures I'd say you will breeze through it.
