I started in an accounting practice this week after leaving a well paid job that i really liked. I left as i am studieng ACCA and wanted to gain full experience in accounts i.e preperation, dpec calculations, accruals & prepayments... I have been told today i am going to be in charge of the payroll for clients.

The Guy currently doing it takes about 90% of this week so i wonder when am i supposed to find the time to do the job i thought i was hired for>?

I refused 2 other jobs closer to home for this "opportunity" and i fear i am after making a huge mistake!!

Can anyone advise what people usually start on?

I've trained and worked in small practice( 1 or 2 partner places bout 15 staff) the juniors would usually start by setting up the accounts file, lead schedules, summarising & analysing cheque payments, cash, sales & purchases books, bank recs, analysis of expenses, basic audit testing, photocopying, companies office returns, sending out bank letters/solicitors letters, vat returns, going to the bank/post office/shop etc for the first 12 months or so..commonly known as the "donkey work";).

Was this guy the last one in, how long has he been doing payroll for?

Over a year since he started there and now i have taken over. I mean i left my job to train and i dont consider almost all patroll training. He tild me i need to learn the payroll as it will helo me understand things better. I understand its good to know about tax etc and it probably will help in reconciling wages but when am i supposed to get the chance to actualy do the reconcilliations.

I want to do donkey work. Its how you learn. I was looking forward to it, i was actualy nervous i would be put in at the deep end with so much work not knowing what to do and its the opposite NO work and the little few bits i had this week to do with accounts i was bearly shown what to do which of course made me do them wrong.

I dont want to write the job off from the start im just worried il end up working here for a long time and at the end of thw day no nothing about accounts!
