My other half is with a large multinational firm for the lat 18+ years but is tired of the 55+ hr weeks.
As it has been so long since he was a job seeker we are unsure as to what's the best route for this..linkedln or recruitment agencies or Irishjobs.ie etc?

Any advice appreciated!

Plenty of jobs out there at the minute for accountants and plenty of high earning positions for those with experience in the reg reporting field. Aircraft leasing and insurance / re insurance positions are also in plentiful supply. I was in the same position last year and went through multiple recruitment agencies and didn't have the best experience. Eventually i reached out to companies i was interested in working with through LinkedIn and secured two job offers. In the end my current company counter offered and i stayed.

I did find that there is plenty of room for bargaining with things like flexible working times and working remotely from home for a lot of companies these days, probably driven by the amount of firms relocating to Ireland where they need to compete on more than just salary.

What is your other half's salary expectations / seniority of position ? This would probably dictate the best approach

I am not promoting what happened to an acquaintance of mine who worked as an accountant for years and found he was a square peg in a round hole and not only hated the years he worked, but the weeks, the days, the hours and probably even the minutes. He took on a much less stressful (and better working hours) job (clerical officer, public service) with a massive earnings drop. Remarkably, he never sought promotion through internal competition.

Almost immediately, he stopped his excessive drinking, became a much happier and content person and saved himself from a long stay mental hospital.

Will be difficult to move to a new job after 18yrs in one place. Difference between 18yrs experience and 5 yrs experience is negligible unless has been moving through different roles and different functional areas of the business.
Could become a specialist maternity cover person - always positions available for this and not too much expected as long as you cover the essentials for a year or so. Nice to move around new industries too and a change of scenery.
