My husband has been employed in the same (smallish) company (48 employees) for the last 12 years. He started straight from college and has worked his way onto the Senior Management Committee. He is quite a bit younger then then the other Senior Managers and consequently gets paid alot less. He is happy enough with his pay - its a little on the low side but in these times he is not getting upset about that. the company is losing money and cuts must be made. The MD does not want to make redundancies and is suggesting pay cuts. He has suggested a 25% pay cut for Senior Managers and a 12.5% pay cut for all other employees.
My husband feels this is a bit unfair as it would leave him worse off then others in the company who are not Senior Managers but do earn more or less the same wage. My husband feels it would be wrong of him to refuse it but is very reluctant to accept it.
Can he accept it for a defined period of time? Like could he agree to the pay cut until October 2009? Does a pay cut mean that your salary is now the new reduced amount OR does it mean that your salary is still the old amount but for a defined period of time you have agreed to forfit some of your salary?
I understand that in the Civil Service, RTE etc when anybody took a pay cut it didn't affect their pension, can he insist on the same, i.e. that the Employers contribution remains the same -a percentage of the old salary?
many thanks for any advice
