A better Visio than Visio ?

Does anyone know of any *working* alternative to Visio ? We have tried out a few productsover the years which claim to do the Visio thing, but they all had problems opening some Visio files.

I am looking for something either for Windows or Linux.

Do you mean for creating or just viewing Visio documents?

Have you tried OpenOffice's Draw application?

I use MS Viso 2002 and find ok but infuriating at times. I have heard about but have never used smartdraw so cant comment, sorry.

Thanks for the links.

I also came across dia - dia-installer.sourceforge.net/ - which is a freeware version, but doesn't import Visio files.

Will continue researching.

Ive just come accross this DiagramStudio from Gadwin (the people who gave us the excellent free screen grab utility Gadwin PrintScreen).
