I started one of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time. i bought a 1989 merc 190E to restore, all going well untill i found out i have to replace exhaust, Advance pitstop quoted almost 800euro, anyone have any, dare i say it, back street mechanics numbers? cheers

Did you try Euro car parts or German Swedish&French car parts(gsfcarparts.com) also try otto car parts, you could be lucky.

Not too sure, just that there is a strong smell of exhaust fumes in the car, only when i open sunroof or windows.

Back box/rear section I'd imagine.Did you contact any suppliers?

Back box has been mentioned to me a few times, so will look around and price that, ave to get the few shillings together first, but thanks for the advice.

I presume the car is making more noise than usual, the strong smell of fumes might be caused by bad carb/injection settings resulting in a lot of unburned fuel going out the back end.

Threre's a man called Alan in Kennedy Crowley cars in Dundrum D14, where they scrap and repair and rebuild old mercs and ive found them very useful as I have an old e200 myself. They could easily have a used exhaust there at knock down prices, maybe worth a call.

There is an "old" Merc specialist in Dublin (3?) at the junction of Annesley Bridge Road /Poplar road / North Strand road and East Wall Road.
Always few old mers parked on the pavement, so easy to find.
