Running right now on BBC One Morning Live is a report of a study in England that demonstrates that 40% of the time you see the 5G logo display and bars on the signal part of your mobile phone in England, you're not getting a 5G service

The towers are programmed to broadcast the 5G logo irrespective of the signal you are receiving.

I wonder if that's the case here in good old Ireland?

To measure the actual service you are connected to, you need to run a utility on your smartphone to see what level of service your provider is actually supplying you with.

Here are some ways to check. I'm sure there are others, please post them if that's OK with the mods.

The issue here is that the network providers may be misrepresenting the service(s) they're charging you for.

Another thing to consider is the amount of circuit bandwidth from the cell tower to the core network of the telco. If it's a 1 gbps wireless backhaul to the core, and you've got 10 busy users in the cell, you're getting 100mbps each, which is not the kind of speed 5G vendors brag about. I would rather test overall IP Transit speeds, but your test is interesting in itself.
 
Thanks @Throwaway555 but I'm trying to find out if that situation applies here. The VT report showed a BBC reporter and a tester with a rig 4 mobiles connected to different service providers testing signals as they walked around different locations.

Would roaming have any impact on what you experienced do you think?

Isn't the above measuring signal strength rather than quality of service?

Same as your home WiFi network, while my WiFi is AX3000 as I move away from the area of coverage data speeds will drop.

Would a more accurate test of 5g service be to measure data speeds in a high signal strength area?

As per the 5g standards as per this link:

The minimum requirements:

for peak data rate: Downlink: 20 Gbit/s, Uplink: 10 Gbit/s
for peak spectral efficiencies: Downlink: 30 bit/s/Hz, Uplink: 15 bit/s/Hz
user plane latency (single user, small packets): 4 ms for eMBB, 1 ms for URLLC
control plane latency (idle => active): 10-20ms
Other requirements:

maximum aggregated system bandwidth: at least 100 MHz, up to 1GHz in higher frequency bands (above 6GHz)
mobility: up to 500km/h in rural eMBB
