3 year career break

I am looking at taking the new career break which was brought in for civil servants. You are required to take it for a 3 year period and I was wondering if anyone knew any further details about it? I am unsure after reading the material whether I could claim SW r take up employment after the 3 years, while waiting to be placed by the Civil Service.

Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated.

you are entitled to claim benefit after the 3 years are up if you have applied to go back and have not been placed. not too sure what the situation is after 12 months.

I am also considering taking a career break in order to look after my children - at the moment I am only working to pay childcare and would prefer to raise them myself.
could anyone help with the following?
a) I am currently on Mat leave and have not used any of my annual leave for this year, if I go from mat leave to career break can I be paid in place of this leave?
b) when you are on career break in order to be a stay at home parent, can you claim the carers tax credit/pass credits on to spouse, or benefit from any other tax breaks/incentives?

Can you work in the state?

Could you work bewteen certain hours?

Will they automatically re-hire you after 3 years?
 
Seems to be a lot of conditions associated with this.


The career break must start no later than 1st September 2009.

Does not give people a lot of flexability.
 
You can take a career break for the various purposes, including self employment. however, a career break for the purposes of taking alternative paid employment is not permitted.

I am on a fixed term contract Public Sector, covering a career break.The terms and conditions in Public sector state career break can be only used for family, education or travel. The person on career break is working in a permanant post in public sector in Northern Ireland. It seems unfair she is able to keep her career break in ROI for up to 5 years, whilst working in NI, and I am in a temporary post with 2 more years for the career break to run.
Is it legal for her to be working outside the state? What rights to a permanant position do I have?

Yes it is legal for her to work outside the State, she could be picking bananas in Guatemala or working in Altnegelvin Hospital, doesn't matter which. Were you unaware that the job you've taken was covering a career break at the time? The terms of your job are as set out in the fixed term contract you signed.
Why is it unfair that she can keep her career break for 5 years? If she hadn't you wouldn't have her job!
 
Why would you think it could be illegal to work outside the state while she is on career break? That's one of the main reasons behind them. I suggest you do a bit of research into the specific terms and conditions of career breaks before claiming how unfair it all is. As for your right to a permanent post - it doesn't exist. You have said that you are on a fixed term contract. On what basis do you think you have an entitlement to permanency?
