24 y/o who just recieved 100k

Hello all!

I am a 24 y/o m from Florida, USA and I am currently deployed over in Iraq. I have just received a little over 100,000 and I want to invest smartly, but I don't even know where to begin. I would like to put about 40-50 k in long term and the rest I am open to suggestions. Thanks for your help and input !
 
Bear in mind that Askaboutmoney.com is an Irish discussion forum focusing mainly on Irish personal finance and related issues. Most posters here may not be aware of the savings/investment options (especially the tax efficient ones) open to a US citizen. You may get more useful feedback on a US specific site. Perhaps www.fool.com might be one place to start?
