20,000euro: best to invest or save?

I am a nurse who is going to work in australia this coming january for the year. I am leaving behind savings of 20,000euro and i dont want to leave it lying in my account for the year. I am a novice when it comes to the prospect of deciding on the best savings plan or investment scheme. Any ideas how i can get the best rate of return on this money?? thanks..
