03 Vectra GTS – CLUNKING NOISE

I own a 03 Opel Vectra 1.8 GTS. The problem is that there is a 'clunking' noise that seems to be coming from the boot area. The noise only happens when I drive on a road that isn't completely smooth or when I got over a speed bump. I've had a mechanic look at it and he confirmed that there's no problem with the exhaust rattling and the shocks are fine. I know if I bring it to Opel they will charge me a fortune so I just wanted to see if anyone had any knowledge of this and what it might be before I go to them.

Any help is appreciated.

If you're happy its not the suspension or exhaust, have you looked for loose stuff in the boot or spare wheel area or looked at the bolts and straps securing the fuel tank? If you have children check under the back seats for money, toys, biscuits, bars, bottles, school books, football boots or even pets, etc.

I have already checked the spare wheel for rattling etc. but not the bolts/straps for the fuel tank, I presume all of that is only accessibly under the car or can you get to any of them through the boot?

It definitely sounds like something more than a toy but I will strip the car down as much as I can and check for anything.

Thanks.

Sounds like rear subframe bushes.A comon nct failure too!!

I'm no mechanic at all, can you tell me if that's a big job to fix? Many thanks

yeah it was knocking then alright and since then I have brought it to a mechanics to let them have a look. They raised it up but saw nothing. They said they expected it would be the shocks or the exhaust but they were happy it was neither.

Sorry for my ignorance, but are the rear bushes part of the shocks?

I have a 99 vectra and a number of years ago I had to have suspension bushes done. Cost about 250 euro at the time.Half labour and half replacement parts.

Labour is a couple of hours on the job.
