    Best Road....Dublin to Ballycotton/Cork.

"Ultimately theres too many cars arriving at a two lane tunnel converging from multiple directions at once" (ClintEastwwod) Absolutely correct. From the eastern side, two lanes merge into one on the approach to the tunnel. They are joined by a lane from Little Island - which also is a lane...

    Best Road....Dublin to Ballycotton/Cork.

PS Castlemartyr traffic is only bad at the usual school and rush hour times - no problem outside of those. But having to negotiate Dunkettle at the end of a drive from Dublin would be hellish. Much easier to come via Youghal, relax with a beautiful coastal view for a few minutes and then on to...

    Best Road....Dublin to Ballycotton/Cork.

If it's just a holiday trip and you're not in a rush, then definitely the Waterford route is best. The M8 via Fermoy, Cork Midleton is just straight boring motorway. And on the way back - the coast road up via Arklow. Much nicer trip.

Health Insurance Can you renew early to secure cheaper rates

Sue Ellen - every year for the last few years If you're already a Laya customer, the price they quote you for a policy renewal is always higher than the on-line price available on the website, for exactly the same conditions. This year my quoted renewal price was ca €120 more than the price I...

Health Insurance Can you renew early to secure cheaper rates

I renew with Laya every year Online to avail of the lower price. Then I write them an e-mail, ([email protected]), to say I have bought a new Laya policy Online and will not be renewing the old one. Works no problem, and you can save yourself a few hundred euro, especially if renewing...

    Stray animal/pet ownership

PS Microchipping is in no way painful and can be done on the spot. Again, this disinformation is unprofessional on the part of this vet. Sounds to me as though they just wanted to hang on to the cat until the other party turned up. Extraordinarily unethical - Complain to the...

    Stray animal/pet ownership

Extraordinary behaviour on the part of this Vet. They must have contacted the so-called previous owners, otherwise how would the 'owners' have even known about "their" cat. I would consider this to border on professional misconduct. A vet should not distribute a client's or patient's...

Using Jack Lynch Tunnel To/From Cork

Definitely agree, Clamball. Either it's provisional or they've totally underestimated the East-West traffic. Most people just carry on in the outer lane & try to squish in further along - which isn't great.

Using Jack Lynch Tunnel To/From Cork

In fairness, I have to say that given the magnitude of this project, the delays and upsets have been minimal. I've have far worse problems with smaller, less well planned roadworks - e.g. anyone remember Killeagh a few years ago, 45 min wait for a resurfacing of a few hundred meters! Dunkettle...

    Alternatives to the Book Depository

Thank you Early Riser, I've just tried Kennys now for the first time. I've also come across this group - https://www.bookworld.ie - I haven't ordered from them yet, but they seem to have a fairly broad range ot titles.

    AXA won't insure unoccupied house

Just to round off: Dolmen-Insurance, in Dublin solved the problem Thanks everyone who replied.

    AXA won't insure unoccupied house

Thanks Red Onion, think you're right. Axa - on the phone the rep said I would need a new policy and they would not cover an unoccupied house. I hadn't thought about classing it as a holiday home at that point. I'll definitely get a broker to sort - but I won't be going back to Axa!

    AXA won't insure unoccupied house

I've just been googling that - might be the answer, thank you. The place will be occupied once a week, which hopefully qualifies it for Holiday Home usage.

    AXA won't insure unoccupied house

So out of interest - what is the insurance situation for a holiday home in Ireland? Someplace where you might just go for the weekend. Surely that can be insured for fire, water damage etc?

    AXA won't insure unoccupied house

I stay overnight once a week - but they wouldn't accept that. Really shoddy behaviour from AXA - the place has been insured with them for over twenty years. I was only using AXA as the house had been insured with them by a deceased family member until recently. I'll try my own insurance provider...

    AXA won't insure unoccupied house

Just a warning to potential customers: AXA refuse to insure houses which are unoccupied. Just discovered that since I am responsible for a house which has just gone through probate. Anyone else in the same position may need to think about changing Insurance Providers.

    Heat in Supermarkets/Banks etc.

Sue Ellen - And we used to do the same in reverse in France during the summer - if things get too hot, just head for the nearest super-cooled Carrefours, especially the frozen-food section!
