Tax on Interactive Brokers uninvested cash interest

Re: DIRT vs income tax on IBKR cash interest. For 2023 they sent me a form R185 Certificate of Income Tax Deducted which showed that they deducted income tax at the standard rate on my cash interest payment.

    Rent or sell and invest?

My overall situation has changed a lot since my original post in 2017, I am back in Ireland but not planning to live in the city again. My objective now is to invest for growth hence the attempt at self-directed stock picking, next try is ETF index trackers.

    Rent or sell and invest?

Another update to my adventures in investing.......I managed a basket of about 35 stocks from Feb 2021 to May 2022. At one stage I was up 30% and it all seemed so easy and fun! Of course 2022 was much more difficult and I learned how hard investment decision making is. I ended up liquidating...

    Rent or sell and invest?

Yes putting it on deposit is not really an option. I looked at ETFs but the exit tax is too high and I don't want to pay high fees to a fund manager etc. I generally just aimed to have a diversity of sectors and regions and balance the risk levels by having a mix of small/large cap, high...

    Rent or sell and invest?

Thought it might be of interest to post an update on how this worked out for me. I ended up renting out my city centre apartment, seemed fine to begin with although it was very difficult to find a property manager. However, the tenants ended up leaving after 18 months or so and due to the...

Buying ETF's - US or EU Broker

I think the tax implications are the main one, both the tax you pay and the tax the fund pays. Funds domiciled in Luxembourg pay 30% tax to the US on dividends from stocks rather than 15% paid by Irish domiciled funds. Then there is the ETF dividend tax you pay, 41% for Lux ETFs and income tax...

    US Dividend ETF strategy

I have realized now that although I can open a trading account I cannot open a cash management account and therein lies the problem. So the search continues....it may not be a viable option after all

    US Dividend ETF strategy

Thanks Steven. I have seen several posters on boards.ie say that it is still possible for Europeans to invest in US ETFs using a US broker. I am not sure if this means the US brokers are not in compliance or what, I guess it could suddenly change if the regulators catch up with them. I’ll...

    US Dividend ETF strategy

Ok so as far as I understand now, if I buy accumulating i.e. non distributing Irish or EU ETFs and hold on to them beyond my 3 year ordinary residence period, I will not be liable for any Irish tax on them, just capital gains tax in Portugal assuming I am still living here when I sell them...

    US Dividend ETF strategy

Yes it’s quite tight really, also I am exposed to currency risk generally on the investment given the strengthening euro. Although over the longer term maybe currency risk is less of an issue. I have also just read about EU accumulating ETFs being taxed by Ireland as gross roll-up. Does this...

    US Dividend ETF strategy

Hi All, I’d appreciate your feedback on my investing strategy. I would have preferred to just stick my money in a European roboadvisor but because of my tax residency situation it makes more sense to do it myself. Tax residency - Irish non resident but ordinary resident for next three years...

Residential 6 month lease - what happens at end of the term?

I am just looking into this also, realizing I completely misunderstood it all. According to the RTB: "A landlord can only terminate a fixed term tenancy where the tenant has been in breach of his or her obligations. Accordingly, a landlord cannot rely on the provisions of Section 34, to...
