Understanding PRSI contributions for receipt of an Irish pension

Can someone please explain how the PRSI contributions are calculated in respect of being able to receive an Irish pension.

I have been working in Ireland on and off since 2001 and recently learned that I might be eligible for a reduced Irish pension should I obtain a minimum of 520 PRSI class A contributions. I registered with mywefare.ie and obtained a contributions record which shows some information as follows...

I just want to understand if the CREDITED contributions are ADDED to the PAID contributions in order to get a contribution number for the year or is the CREDITED number an actual number of contributions made? In other words for the period 2014-2021 do I have a total of 226 contributions (52+52+52+22+5+43) or do I have a total of 194 contributions (52+52+52+22+9+7) or do I have a total of 242 contributions (52+52+52+22+5+43+9+7)?

Thanks for reading!

Please can someone explain as to why I might have received 4 M contributions in 2021 having already been given 52 A contributions?

PRSI Class M is used to record situations in which there is no liability to social insurance, so perhaps you were in that situation for some part of the year in question. However, I wouldn't really worry about it seeing as your record has been credited with the maximum number of reckonable contributions for that year.

These are the criteria, not sure which would apply to you:

• People with no contribution liability such as employees under age 16 or people of pensionable age, currently 66 years, or over (including those previously liable for Class S). Persons in receipt of occupational pensions (on the Occupational Pension income only) or people within Class K with no contribution liability.

It doesn't seem to make any difference as you can only have 52/53 contributions a year anyway.

What you need to be aware of is that those credited reckonable contributions become relevant only after you have made a total of 520 PAID reckonable PRSI contributions. So don't make the mistake of assuming that they count towards the magic 520!

So at the moment the figure of 226, for the example I showed) (52+52+52+22+5+43) is the ACTUAL number of contributions that count towards my goal of 520 contributions?

Exactly. So you have to pay a further 294 Class A PRSI contributions before you'll be eligible for the State Contributory Pension.

You said you were working on and off since 2001 - why are there no contributions between 2001 and 2014

for a full pension - even with 226, you would be eligible for a partial pension, I think

That's misleading, I'm afraid. Even if he meets the 520 paid contribution threshold, he won't be getting the full contributory pension. (He already knows that - he states in his first post that he'll be eligible for a "reduced pension".)

A1 are reckonable for state pension. Any A contributions are reckonable.
A0 is reckonable and if you earn at least 38 euro per week you will gain an A0 contribution. So if you work for 4 hours per week on minimum wage you will gain a reckonable Prsi contribution.

plus 9 and 7 I think?

As @Groucho said, the 9 + 7 may count towards pension cover but not towards the 520 minimum contributions required.
