I'm orginially from the UK and have been working in Dublin for a couple of years. Am looking to buy a new car from the UK and wondering if there's any way (within the law of course) I could avoid paying VRT. Could I buy a car in the UK, have it insured in my name at my parents' UK address for 6 months and then bring it over here and change to Irish insurance? Any comments would be appreciated.

Don't think so.

Fairly sure Customs look for payslips, bank statements, utility bills etc to prove you were living in the UK for the 6 months. You'd maybe get around the utilities by saying you were living with parents, but you'd be caught on the others.

I'm sure the Customs website would tell you exactly what proof of residence they require.

Get a OK family member to bring it over for you and register it in their name they will be intending to live with you ...won't they...Ahem. Once the southern plates go on it. Who cares. Do a change of ownership in 9 months and drive it or sell it.
