wooden Floor for hallway.

Something I didn't do which I wish I had is when tiling or having wood floor laid (I got tiles) is to have a piece cut out just inside the door to have a coir mat inserted. I had this in another house I had and it worked a treat, only downside was it gathered all the dirt and stones and had to be hoovered out regularly but a good idea methinks.

Can a space be cut out retrospectively in a wooden floor to put down a mat? I am assuming that it would a tricky job if possible at all
